This golf friendly island is rapidly becoming the migration point for golfers from Northern Europe between the months of October and May, and during that time you have the opportunity of playing on any of the following courses.
For a small fee you can rent your golf equipment at every club. In most of the clubs you’ll find a very casual atmosphere. Nobody will ask for your handicap and no club requires a membership.
Come to Tenerife and play golf in a beautiful and fascinating landscape (good weather practically guaranteed!).
Tenerife has six magnificent golf courses, placed at three different points: One in the green and fresh north and the others in the south, surrounded by sea and precipices.
All these golf courses have excellent infrastructures, near to “de luxe urbanizations” and the airport.
The Amarilla Golf & Country Club
Amarilla is an extensive link-typed golf course. It has some spectacular seaside views. Therefore, the majority of its holes border -or are placed across- the sea.
This golf course is surrounded by precipices and de luxe buildings -with grounds where to practice other sports such as riding, tennis, squash, swimming, or sailing.
In 1,990, Amarilla was designed by Donald Steel, into some scarce-in- vegetation grounds. Also, there are few -but intelligently located- sand bunkers : So you really need to execute sure shots, in order to enter a green.
Also in that year, Amarilla Golf & Country Club celebrated Tenerife´s II Open, organised by the P.G.A European Tour, into which participated the most outstanding European players of that season.
Its climate is warm and sunny throughout the year -and it has the refreshing privilege of a constant sea breeze.

Golf del Sur
Inaugurated in 1,778, it was designed by José Gancedo -the famous six-time champion of the Spanish Amateur Single Championship. The place chosen for its location was once a seaside, desert area of 800,000 m2-which, nowadays, is occupied by 27 holes. Into an alike extension, there are residential complexes, apartments, villas, a hotel, and a golf school.
The landscaping vegetation is insular -i.e. autoctonous : Canarian palm trees, dragon trees, and several types of cactus. And the surface is planted with meadow grass, always well cut. Therefore, it is a worthy competition course for the P.G.A. European, to which this course belongs, and for the several Opens which are celebrated here -such as the 1,989/1,992/1,993 Tenerife Open (the first and last competition of this tournament being won, respectively, by José Mª Olazábal and Mark James).
The climate in this course is nice : There is few rainy days; and, during Summertime, there is a blowing wind -so you have to calculate each hit carefully not to make any mistake. (By the way, these winds are very much liked by wind-surfers, who like to sail in the surrounding and Internationally-known Médano beach).
With temperatures rarely falling bellow 21 degrees, a couple of hours flight will take you to the Golf del Sur. This course designed by Pepe Gancedo, on several occasions been the scene of the European P.G.A. Circuit, with victories by José María Olazábal, Mark James and David Gilford. In 1995, Golf del Sur accepted one of the confrontation series of games by Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson. Golf del Sur offers you a fantastic and fun course with exceptional bunkers of black, volcanic sand and is set amidst a landscape of colour contrast, combining the blue seas of the Atlantic.
The Golf del Sur, with its large bunkers an wide fairway, will test the scratch golfer and the keen amateur alike. The challenge from some of the difficult iron shots will call for precision and these pencross greens are fast, requiring good chipping skills upon your approach. The rookie will gain much from learning on the practise greens of the links course and the international standard of many of the coaches.
So whether it is a family holiday, a weekend with fellow golfers or time out from a business conference, the Golf del Sur is suitable for all and with 27 holes, this course adds much variety for competition and tournament.
The Real Club de Golf de Tenerife
This golf course is only 16-odd kilometers outside the capital of the Island, Santa Cruz De Tenerife, and only 24, from the tourist resort in Puerto De La Cruz. It nestles in the greenest part of the Island -among pine trees, laurels, and immense eucalyptus-, and is bordered, in parts, by small, shallow gullies. As a result of the deep British influence on local customs and sports, golf has been played on the island from as early as the beginnings of the 20 th -although the Real Club De Golf de Tenerife was not founded until 1,932. As a matter of fact, very British characteristics are still to be savoured in the course’s clubhouse, where the atmosphere is hugely cosy and relaxed. The course was designed by several famous players, who actually belonged to the club, such as Andrés Alberto, Alberto Lucena, Joaquín Laynez and Aureliano Yanes; though over the last few years, a large part of the course has been modified in parts.
Nowadays, by way of homage to the ex-player Tito Abreu (who participated in many European circuits), the Pro-Am Tito Abreu Championship is held, being an event attracting all the foremost figures in Spanish golf. Also, The Spanish National and International Amateur Calendar Championship has been held in this course. The climate at the Real Club De Golf De Tenerife is breezy and cool during the Winter, and warm and sunny in the Spring.
