What is going on in Tenerife?
After the Carnival celebration in northern Tenerife in February, the southern carnival begins on the 1st of March and will continue for eleven days until the 11th. Main venues are Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos, putting on crowd pleasing and exciting events. This years carnival is being held under the motto “Brazil”. The big carnival parade of Arona takes place on 10 March at 4pm. The highlight of the carnival, the “Entierro de la sardina”, or “burial of the Sardine” is held on 11 March around 8pm. The tone changes for Easter with hooded processions in some towns. The ones in La Laguna on Good Friday 29 March is known to be the best, so this is where you want to be on Easter Friday if you like traditions. More information available at: aytolalaguna.com
If you are into Spanish music, you shouldn’t miss the “Premios Dial” taking place in the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz on 13 March. Starting at 6.30pm the “Cadena Dial Awards Ceremony” will honor the best Spanish singing artists. There will be performances by Rosana, Efecto Pasillo, Lagarto Amarillo, India Martínez and many others. Each year, the proceed from ticket sales will be invested to support social projects. Lovers of Rock Music should visit the “Monsterfest”. Numerous rock artists will perform on 15 and 16 March in El Palmar/ Arona.
For those who love electronic music, they will love the “MAGMA”. MAGMA stands for “Meeting Approaching Global Music Art” and names a festival taking place on 30 March in Playa de las Americas. The icon of electronic music, Marco Carola, will be performing. You get tickts via internet magmafest.com and on Facebook (Magma Meeting Festival). The first 1000 tickets are sold at special price of 10€.
There are also several art exhibitions worth a visit. Some interesting ones are organised at the TEA “Tenerife Espacio de las artes” in Santa Cruz. Until the 30th of March the TEA hosts the exhibition ”Piel de gallina. Regina José”, the first exhibition in Spain by Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo, who was awarded the Golden Lion at the Biennial in Venice.
Furthermore you can also visit the exposition “Retos al vacio” by Maria Belen Morales, a local artist born in Tenerife. This work of contemporary art can be admired during March and April. (Further information: teatenerife.es)
Also, during March and April Francisco Castro displays ”Picturebook” in the gallery of the Government of the Canary Islands in Santa Cruz (Sala de Arte Contemporáneo del Gobierno de Canarias, Calle José Murphy, 12 Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The exhibition gathers together the works created over one decade by Lanzarote-born artist Francisco Castro.
Another interesting exhibition is on show at Los Lavaderos art gallery in Santa Cruz. ‘Vegetación cívica” is the title of artist Emili Bermúdez’s photographic exhibition which ends at the 30th of March. (Further information: santacruzdetenerife.es)
Esculturas Bronzo, the sculpture workshop and artistic foundry in San Cristóbal de la Laguna (Calle Núñez de la Peña, 19) invites you to visit ”Recorrido”, an exhibition by Medín Martín. You get the chance to explore the work of Medín Martín until the 6th of April.
