It has a warm climate and its skies are clear nearly all the year around. These climatic characteristics have made it a famous centre for winter tourism, and its hotels and tourist services have undergone a spectacular development. The port of Los Cristianos still houses a small fishing fleet but it has become more important as a morning point for a large number of yachts and sport-boats. It is possible to travel to nearby island of La Gomera by means of the ferries, which make two journeys every day.

Playa de Las Americas is one of the most popular tourist areas in Tenerife. Located at the island’s south-western extreme (maps), it offers fabulous sandy beaches and a modern holiday infrastructure. It tends to be very popular particularly with the younger generation.

Most of the beaches tend to be man made and are protected from erosion by breakwaters making the coast effectively a series of small protected coves. In Las Americas, Playa de Troja I-II and Playa de Fañabe have been awarded with blue flags, official symbol of optimal beaches in the European Union.
This area of Tenerife is where you will find most of the available water activities including surfing, jet-skiing, hang-gliding paracending, diving, snorkelling, and windsurfing.

Playa de Las Americas has a very warm weather the whole year as it surrounded and protected by the Teide mountain and boasts an array of world class facilities, with its selection of beautiful, sandy beaches, cafés and bars to its venues offering live entertainment and cabaret everyday.

There are plenty of places to eat with varied cuisines to suit every national palate from fish and chips to excellent local cuisine (see local cuisine restaurants in Adeje).

Tenerife is internationally known as the eternal spring Island. His geographic location, so close to the African continent makes you think of a more dry and warm weather, but it is not the case due to the Alisios, a wind stream. The local orography and the cold maritime stream is responsible of the fresh temperatures in Tenerife beaches.

In general, the weather in the Island is very soft, warm and moderated during all seasons of the year. There aren’t periods of intense cold or very high temperatures. The average temperature is around 18°C/62°F in winter and it reaches around 25°C/81°F degrees in summer. If you want to see the different average temperatures by month, as well as the precipitation in mm followed by and sun hours, click here.

The photo below shows the beach of Camison in December, in Playa de las Americas (Tenerife South).
